Control of Natural Gas in Emergency Situations Because safety is of paramount importance to the natural gas industry, the Energy Association of PA developed this booklet as a guide for firefighters, police and emergency personnel who respond to fires at locations with natural gas utility service, or who investigate natural gas odors. Recently updated, natural gas utilities may use this publication for internal training or as a supplement in teaching safe procedures to emergency personnel. (Procedures in this booklet are intended to serve as guidelines, and should be followed in connection with company-specific policies).  In addition, some fire departments and other community emergency organizations have directly ordered these booklets for their emergency personnel. Rich in content, this 24-page booklet includes a background on natural gas, its characteristics, and how a natural gas distribution company delivers natural gas to the communities it serves.  Suggestions are also provided on the initial steps to take when fighting a fire where gas facilities are involved.  The publication also contains information on accepted standards for gas piping, meter sets, and regulator installations. Safety at all times is a watchword of the natural gas industry and this booklet serves as a solid foundation to impart knowledge of the natural gas industry to emergency personnel. SPECIAL REPORT ... Natural Gas Winter Operations Update                 As this coming winter unfolds, this update will provide valuable up-to-date information on how the Association's member natural gas utilities are meeting the demands of their sales customers.      Twice each month, from November to March, these updates will report on the Association members' projections both for the amount of gas their sales customers will demand for the rest of the winter, and the supply sources the members plan to use to meet that demand.       Future issues will also report whether the winter to date has been colder or warmer than average.       Securing sufficient supplies to meet demand has been a hallmark of our members’ business for decades. By providing these updates, we intend simply to provide concrete assurance, throughout the winter, of our members’ continuing commitment to Pennsylvania’s natural gas customers.
